This symptom (seeing all 1's as your Ethernet address) is usually
caused by unplugging the card or accidentally changing its base
address. When the driver tries to read the card's address PROM, the
card doesn't respond so the PC bus pullups return all 1s.

I have this huge black hole where my knowledge of networking and amateur
packet radio should be and an appitite for self-destruction that would put a
lemming to shame, so hold onto your seats, it's gonna be a bumpy ride.
Okay, I have a 486DX2/66 on its way from Gateway 2000. I have every
intention of installing Linux 0.99.11 from SLS 1.03 and then, soon,
installing the Linux 0.99.12 kernel. If that means nutz to you, just think,
"He's running a PC-Unix." Then, I would like to get a SLIP connection to the
local university at some point in the future accross the 14.4kbps modem in
the system, but the way the Director of Telecommunications sounded, that
won't be for quite a while. So a link to Internet is pretty much out of the
picture. I would, then, like to see about getting an address on what seems
to be the packet version of Internet, AX.25, like N9THG.#th.in.usa.na or,
perhaps even, N9THG@N9THG.ampr.org, but I know even less about AX.25 than I
do about TCP/IP. I know that Linux has a TCP/IP package, but is that gonna
help me for AMPR or am I gonna have to get some half compatible software
software to access a minute percentage of what ever hardware I finally get
to access AX.25net, 44 net, AMPRnet, AMPR.ORG, an AMPR version of Internet
using TCP/IP, or what ever it is that is out there.
I'm leaning toward a Gracilis Packet-Twin, but I don't want to get
locked into a single frequency with the single crystal radio they ship with
the full kit. I'm also looking at the AEA PK-900, but don't want to get
locked into a peice of hardware for which there is no Unix software that
takes full advantage is all of its features (which is, of course, the reason
why I'm getting an Ultrastor Ultra34F, ATI Graphics Ultra Pro XLR with 2MB
of VRAM, and a SoundBlaster 16 ASP to run under Linux). Also, what radio
will I use with the TNC or radio-modem? If they measure up to the
throughput, and transmission quality standards, I'd really like to use the
Ramsey 2m, 144MHz, and 440MHz transcievers. Primarily because they're cheap,
easy to build, easy to modify, and have a packet port built in. But, what
will interface with that port? The Packet-Twin? The PK-900? Both? Neither?
Okay, once on the air, what will I find? What will I be able to supply
to others through my station? What frequencies should I operate on to get
the most out of my equipment and software? I'm hoping it will look something
like Internet, where you just drop in an ethernet card, get a licensed
address, and the whole world opens up. But, I'm afraid it'll be more like
hooking up a slow modem, fighting with the telecom software, then barely
being able to dialup a local BBS.
Can anyone point me to some documents (please don't mail me the docs, my mailbox
is held together with bailing wire) on interfacing with TCP/IP for AMPR,
interfacing via AMPR itself, and the functioning of AMPR networks?
Can anyone point me to some documents on AMPR under Unix and Linux in
particular? What kind of support is there out there?
I am cross posting this to:
GRACILIS-L Listserv list (GRACILIS-L@knuth.mtsu.edu)
TCP-GROUP Listserv list (TCP-GROUP@ucsd.edu)
PACKET-RADIO Listserv gateway to rec.radio.amateur.packet
(PACKET-RADIO@ucsb.edu) (Don't know why I'm still using this, I have
usenet now)
KA9Q-UNIX Listserv list (KA9Q-UNIX@knuth.ntsu.edu)
The HAM channel of the Linux-Activist mailing list
(linux-activist@niksula.hut.fi)
Anyone know how to subscribe to hs-modem@wb3ffv.ampr.org or
gateways@uhm.ampr.org?
Please send all responses to the Unix address in my sig. I will compile
any info and redistribute it on the appropriate channel for its content, but
primarily, I'll just go toward filling in the huge gaps in my mind.

It is already supported by dk5sg's WAMPES, but needs a tiny kernel patch,
because Linux's raw sockets are broken...
